Magill Police Station – circa 1909

In a report to the South Australian parliament in 1909 it was reported that “a new police station at Magill has been erected, comprising a charge-room, four living rooms, cellar, outside kitchen and bathroom.” The stunning red brick building, located at 607 Magill Road, was the first purpose-built police station in Magill.

The District Council of Campbelltown was proclaimed on 27th February 1868.

As the population increased in the Eastern suburbs, so did the instanced of serious crime. The Norwood Police Station opened in 1876, and the Marryatville Police Station in 1885. There were no police stationed in Campbelltown until the establishment of the Magill Police Station in 1898.

The newspapers reported on 12th July 1898, “Payneham, Magill and Campbelltown are practically without police protection, and a message has to be sent to headquarters in the city when any assistance is required.”

In November 1898, Mounted Constable William Keating, was one of the first to be stationed at a house in Chapel Street, Magill, owned by the Methodist church. A purpose-built Magill Police Station on Magill Road replaced the temporary accommodation in 1909.

This beautiful heritage building, in the heart of Magill, is being given the facelift and restoration that she deserves – and is well overdue. She is looking tired and dilapidated after many years of neglect.

The Magill Police Station will be transformed into Magill Village Vet – the new home of St Bernards Road Veterinary Clinic – and will once again be the hub of the Magill Village community.
